P002 → Zoom.0
Zoom.0 is a video piece presented in installation form, recorded with a webcam using the Zoom video conferencing software. The piece makes use of the Zoom software’s ability to create video and picture backgrounds to hide the backdrop of the users video feed. Feeling alienated with having a majority of my interpersonal interactions pushed onto a video conferencing platform intended for business and commercial interactions, I began to push back against the functionality and design choices to find my own space within the platform. I began spending hours in empty Zoom meetings, recording myself and my surroundings in front of stock photo images and photos of far away places I had taken while traveling. I then took the resulting video recorded in Zoom and used them as new backdrops to record more video, using the software effects and webcam feedback to create new spaces. Thought this iterative process I found and cultivated a narrative within the software that was my own. The video was an attempt to discover the organic, the unexpected, and the personal within a new virtual technological space.
